Restore: The Science of Skin Recovery

Model with Reboost Balm

Your skin repairs while you rest

A study of 60 women compared good sleepers (7–9 hours) with poor sleepers. 72 hours after the skin barrier had been gently disrupted, the good sleepers had recovered 30% more. They also recovered faster from UV redness, lost less water through the skin and had fewer signs of intrinsic skin ageing.

Beauty sleep, in other words, isn’t just a saying – it is when the barrier does much of its repair work.

Stress shows on your skin

In a study of healthy women, both psychological stress and a night of sleep deprivation delayed the recovery of the skin barrier, and the effect was linked to changes in the immune system’s signalling molecules. Exercise, on the other hand, did not slow the barrier’s recovery.

Rest, a good night’s sleep and moving your body are part of skincare too.

Give it the right materials

The barrier is built from ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. At night, a rich layer on top reduces water loss while the skin repairs – something dermatologists have recommended for decades and social media now calls “slugging”.

We do it with plants: Reboost Balm is water-free and made with shea butter, argan oil and calendula, and Recovery Serum adds ceramides to support the barrier. Use them as the last step of your evening routine.
